The 5th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies suffered a heartbreaking end to the 08-09 season when their dream of competing for a national championship crumbled in Friday's power pool play. Tech was denied entry to Saturday's gold bracket by two very tight losses to an underrated Colorado team and #12 Arizona (25-14, 24-26, 12-15 and 25-16, 23-25, 12-15), both of whom moved on to a T-5 finish. With the wind taken out of their sails, the Hokies only managed to move past the first round in Silver play, eventually losing to #10 UC-San Diego and taking a T-21 finish. Tech's B-Team competed in D3 play, and matched last year's performance with another T-3 finish. Congratulations to Bryan Pine for being named a D3 First Team All-American.

On Saturday night, Tech played JMU at the Grand Opening of Richmond Volleyball Club's new facility, in a best of 5 match in front of an audience of around 400 people. The Hokies came out a little rusty in the first game, letting the Dukes go on some long serving runs and take the game. It was all Virginia Tech after that though, as they pulled through and took the next 3 games, winning the match 3-1. Congratulations VT-A!

"The two time reigning EIVA champions look poised for a three-peat. Virginia Tech made serious waves on the national radar by winning the Back to the Hardwood Classic this past weekend at Michigan State. It was an all EIVA final, as the Hokies defeated Penn State 2-0 (25-22, 25-16) to claim the biggest tournament win in the country so far this pre-season. It was the first time that two EIVA teams advanced to the finals in Hardwood history. Penn State had beaten Virginia Tech 2-1 (26-24, 25-27, 15-13) earlier in the challenge round, only to fall to the Hokies later in the championship match. Virginia Tech posted big wins over Grand Valley, 2009 National Semifinalist Illinois, and Ball State on their way to the finals." - eivavb.com

After a frustrating loss to their Alumni team at the Fall Invitational, the Hokies came out strong in Annapolis. In their first match of the day, Virginia Tech faced the toughest competitor in the tournament, George Mason's Varsity squad. Playing well across the board, Tech was able to pull of a very close 3-game win, marking the club's first ever win against a D1 Varsity team. After this outstanding victory, VT carried their momentum throughout the day, posting wins over a Ramapo D3 Varsity team, and EIVA powerhouse Penn State. The Hokies received a 'by' after winning their pool, matching up against 2009 EIVA runner-up Navy in the semis. Tech let down a little in the second game, but was able to take the win, 2-1. The finals poised a rematch for VT and George Mason, and unfortunately Tech was too tired too pull out another win. Taking 2nd place amongst some very tough competition, it was a very successful day for Virginia Tech.

The Virginia Tech Hokies began their 2009-2010 season this weekend with the annual VT Fall Invitational. The A-team came out of pool play undefeated, with wins over WVU's B-Team and a Pennsylvania-based team, organized by former club president Ross Deihm. The Hokies then squared off against WVU's A-Team and JMU in a power pool, winning both in 2 straight games, which gave them the #1 overall seed going into playoffs and a by into the semifinals. VT was finally stopped in the semis by their alumni team, led by 2009 All-EIVA setter Casey Doyle and 6'10" right-side hitter Andrew Fuller. The highlight of the tournament was the win over in-state rival JMU. The Hokies will play again in 2 weeks in Annapolis, MD, where they will see some much tougher competition.

"The Virginia Tech Hokies have won back to back EIVA East Coast Championships. In a thrilling day of collegiate volleyball at Maryland's Reckord Armory, the EIVA's best teams battled back and forth for nearly twelve straight hours, until there was only one team left standing. Led by 2008 NCVF Coach of the Year, Sean Callahan, and a team of talented giants, Virginia Tech pummeled Maryland and Syracuse 2-0 in pool play. The Hokies were then stifled by the U.S. Naval Academy in a heart pounding three game match that ultimately went Navy's way (23-25, 25-20, 15-12). In other pool play action, the Penn State Nittany Lions went undefeated, not dropping a single game against Virginia, Cortland, and Pennsylvania. James Madison overcame Buffalo, Delaware, and Army to win their pool. The quarterfinals saw Virginia Tech dispatch Buffalo 2-0, and Navy defeat Pennsylvania 2-1. The semifinals were highlighted by a clash of the titans, when Virginia Tech took on Penn State in a rematch of last year's EIVA Championship finals. Once again, the Hokie onslaught was too overpowering for the Nittany Lions. The Virginia Tech blockers controlled the net, and Setter Casey Doyle fed his horde of monster hitters set after set until Outside Hitter TJ Purcell put the final nail in the coffin (25-21, 25-19). In the other semifinal match, Navy's Opposite Greg Reichel and EIVA Conference MVP Austin Lanteigne were too much for James Madison to handle. The two teams traded blows until a Navy block sealed the Dukes' fate in game three (26-24, 22-25, 15-11). The final match featured a rare showcase of talent and a rematch of what was perhaps the most exciting match of the day, when Navy defeated Virginia Tech 2-1 in pool play. This time, though, the Hokies were determined to exact their revenge. Reichel and Lanteigne did all they could to beat the Hokies, but the Midshipmen were ultimately frustrated by a relentless Virginia Tech attack. Game 1 went back and forth until the Hokies prevailed 33-31, despite Lanteigne's heroic effort to save a ball from going out of bounds. Virginia Tech had less trouble in the second game, as Libero Chris Hazell made one athletic play after another in the back row, and Opposite Bob Hoke hammered home three of the Hokies' last five points to win the game 25-21. With the win, Virginia Tech earned the right to be called the EIVA East Coast Champions for the second consecutive year." - eivavb.com

"Virginia Tech became the first school to win divisional championships in both Division I and Division II in the same season on Saturday, when both the Hokies' A and B squads captured titles in the EIVA South. The Virginia Tech A team defeated both James Madison and Virginia to claim the D-I championship, while the Tech B team triumphed over Longwood, Radford, Liberty, and JMU B to earn the Division II crown. Both teams will attempt to defend their 2008 conference championships as they enter the 2009 EIVA East Coast Championships as the South's top seeds. Last year, Virginia Tech claimed EIVA titles in both D-I and D-II."(eivavb.com) Further congratulations to Casey Doyle, TJ Purcell, and Shaun Baze for making the DI all-star team, and Bryan Pine, Chase Grinnell, and David Pry for making the DII all-star team. Way to go Hokies!

Virginia Tech traveled to JMU for the weekend for the 2-day Annual Derrick Beckner Memorial Tournament. Tech got off to a rocky start as usual, losing their 8am match to Messiah in a close 3-game battle, but got it together as they won out the rest of the day, with a notable win over the respectable men's team, Rhodes Block. Sunday morning Tech came out strong, first taking out men's team Aloha, and then capturing another close 3-game victory over Rhodes Block. Virginia Tech was then matched up with JMU in the semis, where they extended their head-to-head record to 3-0, winning in 2 games. In the finals Tech faced a tough men's team from Virginia Beach led by Jeff Kubichan, but held strong with another win in 2. Congratulations to VT-A for winning their second tournament of the year.

Virginia Tech's A-Team split into 2 teams for their Fall Home tournament, and finished undefeated on the day taking first and second place. Both teams had notable wins over in-state rival JMU.

"It was all Hokie all day Saturday, as Virginia Tech dominated the 2008 EIVA East Coast Championships, capturing titles in both Division I and Division II. The Virginia Tech B team claimed Division II gold with a two game (25-20, 25-14) win over Brockport, leaving just enough time to cheer on the A team in the Division I finals. After defeating both an upstart Cortland team and a determined Delaware squad in pool play, Virginia Tech earned a bye for the quarterfinals. Well rested and focused, the Hokies trounced the two-time defending EIVA Champion Maryland in the semifinals in two games (25-14, 25-17). In other semifinal action, the Nittany Lions of Penn State survived a back and forth slugfest with James Madison, who entered the tournament as the South's top seed. Penn State escaped in game three with a win (20-25, 25-23, 15-10), setting up a heavyweight battle with Virginia Tech. Outside Hitter Tom Heffner and Opposite Gary Vogel did all they could they could to match the Hokies' onslaught, but in the end, it was not enough. The Virginia Tech defense, led by a nearly flawless performance from Libero Chris Hazell, proved equal to each task, while the offense pounded away with kill after kill. Tournament MVP Casey Doyle meticulously orchestrated a relentless attack for the Hokies, allowing for the explosive arm of Opposite Bob Hoke to terminate set after set. Virginia Tech claimed the title in two exciting games, 25-21 and 25-23, giving Head Coach Sean Callahan the right to proudly distribute gold medals and the championship trophy to his team." - http://eivavb.com/archives.asp
